I often ask myself that very question.

Most of my other creatures operate on an instinctual level more or less according to a set of basic programs in their brains.

They are beautiful and I love them all, but they didn't offer the interesting challenges I needed. I could pretty well guess what they were going to do.

So I gave you free will without really thinking about it too hard. I just thought it would be more interesting if you were beyond my control.

Ever since, I've been busy trying to keep you from hurting yourselves.
I'm tempted to take free will away sometimes, but I'm not going to do that. I want to see how it all turns out.
